What we keep

When you look up a VIN we ask the automaker's sticker service for it and keep a copy of what comes back (the sticker PDF, or the fact that there wasn't one), so the same VIN is never fetched twice. A VIN identifies a vehicle, not its owner.

We count lookups by brand, model year and result to see which cars people bring. That count does not include the VIN or anything about you.

Your IP address is held in memory for one minute to stop automated abuse, and is not stored.

Who else sees it

The VIN goes to the U.S. government's NHTSA decoder (to read the make and year) and to the automaker whose sticker service we ask. Nothing is sold or shared with anyone else.
